Case study

SmokoShare: a smoker knows a smoker.

A share-house finder for people who smoke, vape or use 420, anywhere in Australia. Every room shows its rules up front, on a sign. The first real listing went live the day after the repository was created.

The problem

Most room listings either don't mention smoking or rule it out. People who smoke end up guessing, or finding out at the inspection. SmokoShare starts with the question everyone needs answered: where, in this house, can you smoke, vape or use 420?

Every listing has a sign that answers it for tobacco, vapes and 420 separately: inside, outside only, or not at all, plus where the smoking spot is. Searches filter on it, so someone who vapes inside never wastes an inspection on a house where they can't.

Careful, because it has to be

A site like this attracts things you don't want on it, so it's built to be checked by a person first. That keeps it small and trustworthy while it grows.

  • Every listing is confirmed by email, then checked by a person before it goes live. Later changes to a listing's wording, place or photos are checked too, while the approved version stays up.
  • People message hosts through the site. The host's email address stays hidden until they reply, and messages that look like drug sales are held for a person to read first.
  • Hosts and people on the waitlist manage everything from private links in their emails. There are no passwords to forget or leak.
  • Photos have their location data removed in the browser before upload, and again on the server.
  • Rate limits on the forms, and a daily clean-up that deletes old messages and unconfirmed details on schedule.

Australia-wide without thin pages

Each room has a suburb, postcode and state, with the state worked out from the postcode. Suburb and state pages only exist while they have rooms, so search engines never find a page that says "nothing here".

Five guides cover what renters actually ask, including taking over someone's place on a lease, with each state's bond rules linked to its official source. A free tool makes a printable house smoking agreement and a sign for the back door, and listings link to it with their own rules filled in.

Fast and plain

There's no framework. Pages are written on the server, with their styles inside them and allowed by the Content Security Policy by fingerprint. The typeface is served from the site itself. On a phone, longer content sits behind folds, which took the home page from about 4,660 to 2,490 pixels tall.

41 unit tests and 40 end-to-end tests run on every change. The end-to-end tests go through every flow, from listing a room to the host replying, against a local copy of the site with a stand-in database.

What it shows

A focused marketplace can go from idea to live in a day without cutting corners on privacy, moderation or speed. If your business needs sign-ups, email confirmation, an approval step or a private admin area, this is that kind of build.
